Today’s girl would seem like a girl on a mission, if not for the flamboyant violet top, striped shorts and searing red mini-bag that rule out all possibility of her ever passing discreetly unnoticed. No sly Bond girl, this one. Despite this, I’m convinced she’s hiding something underneath that confident smile. Probably the coordinates to the best frozen yogurt in town.

Up here in the northwest-iest corner of the pacific northwest, the chance of my bathing suit ever seeing the light of day is so remote that I never shell out the cash on a great swimsuit, no matter how much I might be tempted to. I have scant motivation anyways, since I’ll never be that effortlessly-beachy-chic girl. Given the vacation choice between Hawaii and rainy London town, I’d pick the latter without a second thought.

So I guess it’s probably unsurprising that when it comes to swimsuits, I’m a one-piece kind of girl. And I’m staunchly against the bikini. I’ve never really understood why sand and surf makes it appropriate to strip to your underwear. It’s been a good few years for one-piece lovers because of the return of retro-swimwear. However, what I love about the Jones New York number above is its decidedly modern – but so not boring - look: orange poppy print, blouson top and crisp black bottoms.

Yes, my scanner very rudely chopped off this young woman’s elbow and little-toe. I sincerely hope this doesn’t take away from the intended dose of cheer that this sketch is supposed to help inject into your Monday (coupled with the knowledge that brighter days are here again, and you may even be able to venture out in a cheery ensemble like this yourself this week!)

I found this little old sketch lurking around in some corner of my computer. I never posted it, but I really like its simplicity.

A little loose and a lot colorful – I love Kate Spade and I love their Live Colorfully ad campaign – so this is vaguely inspired by a combination of those things. Check out my shop for prints, cases, etc. featuring this springy splash of a sketch.

There’s something about coral lace…it’s the perfect combination of ladylike and fun, and it manages to modernize lace without losing its femininity and elegance. What do you think of coral lace?

Dior dresses the quintessential lady – and there’s something magical about putting it on a gamine, Audrey Hepburn -like woman that gives it a new charm. Audrey will always be my icon of style, with her way of combining wild elegance with unassuming simplicity in one sweep. I love that this illustration gives a modern Dior look a vintage charm. Combining the modern trends with that mid-century elegance from couture’s golden age is always my style philosophy, and as I try to develop an illustration style that’s all my own, I am looking to mid-century masters like Rene Gruau, whose strong graphic line is one of my favorite illustration techniques, and accentuating the winged eyes and bowed lips of that 50s era, while still drawing modern, fresh clothing.
